Moving forward: Life after lockdown for those in Beauty Business.
Hey all you cool cats and kittens, it looks like here in Portugal we are slowly beginning to make the move back to “normality” starting with Hair and Beauty salons, I know, I’m slightly confused too.. But hey if that's what we are doing to get back into the swing of life then we better buckle up!
In this post I’m going to be talking about what steps I’ll be taking as a Makeup Artist to ensure complete hygiene in my business going forward, these are things I would hope everyone in this industry would be practising anyway prior to Covid 19 but alas that is not the case. I will obviously be referring to makeup brushes but please adapt it to hair tools etc.. I think it’s really important to let our clients know that we will be extra mindful of hygiene now so feel free to share the info, or write your own letter to suit your business and share with your clients on your social media or via email so they know what steps you will be taking to protect them and yourselves from now on.
So what am I/We doing to keep our clients safe:
Wipe down (with alcohol based disinfectant) all surfaces we place our makeup or tools on.
Wash hands for 30 seconds before beginning ANY treatment of ANY kind.
Hand sanitizer as an extra step before beginning treatment.
Clean brushes & tools that have been washed and sanitized before every client.
Always use disposable products when applicable (such as mascara wands) and NEVER double dip. For lip liners, wipe down the end and sharpen before each client.
Wipe down all products before putting back into your kit to avoid cross contaminating any other products.
Always scrape or scoop out products onto a pallete or paper towel, ensuring that you are never double dipping into a product, this of course applies to lipstick too.
Always clean and prep your working surface ready for your next client.
Use a sanitizing spray on all surfaces such as door knobs, chairs, your mobile phone and anything else coming into contact with your hands.
These guidelines are applicable whether you are working from a salon, hotel or client’s home.
If you are still unsure on how common hygiene practise works it would be a good idea to retrain or do a refresher course, hygiene is one of the first and most important things we need to learn in this Industry regardless of a pandemic.
Barbecide is offering a free course on hygiene which you can complete in an hour and get a certificate to add to your collection, now would be a really good time to do that if you’re self taught or need reminding, you can find it on their website.

Lastly, if you or any of your team members are feeling unwell do not go ahead with any appointments and if your client is showing any signs you reserve the right to cancel their appointment.
Well that’s all I have on that matter, I think anything else is pretty logical and I'm still unsure of the actual rules when they do open, we may be required to wear masks at all times too but I am not sure.
We will have to watch this space but I look forward to seeing you on the other side 🙌
